The amount of corruption in government is so deep that trust is dead. It isn’t just the Democratic Party that is on life support, it is the ‘Swamp” that the current president talks about. The entire system is close to collapsing due to the corruption and exposing it does little but confirm what people already know. The rats are steering the ship and have been for a long time. I don’t think this can be fixed. I know now why people rise up. Sometimes you just have to take all the rats out and start over. I think that might be coming because history has a way of repeating itself. There might be a fatal flaw in humanity that can’t be self-corrected. Keep a low profile and take care of yourself because no one else will.

That is my extreme take on what could happen.

You should read about "the great filter" - as an explanation why, after billions of years, there is no apparent species that ever advanced to space travel.
At the core of that, is the unavoidable reality that a species that survives and conquers their environment - will never reach that level of advancement because they will destroy themselves in a variety of ways.
The first major sign we are approaching that - was Covid. The first successful wide spread virus that was artificially made. You can bet your ass that the Chinese, and even us - right now - are studying why the virus was particularly weak given how many had it. And they will take that knowledge and make a worse one.
It is inevitable.

Implementing GAO recommendations would've been a worthy project. But that would likely save money and make the government function better.

The Treasury reports spending at the end of every weekday. Surprise, spending is up under DOGE. But DOGE is indeed killing a lot of third world kids, so I guess there's that.

When we were a great country and a beacon to the world, of course. For both moral and realpolitik reasons it was a no-brainer. Spend pennies to eradicate disease, prevent epidemics, save millions of lives, and achieve reverence among a billion people around the world.

Now that we're sliding toward isolationism and shitty tinpot dictatorship, I suppose not. Maybe China will put a few tenths of a percent of its budget toward winning their adoration.

It wouldn't, it tends to happen to cut a business from waste and cost especially when profits decline, pending recession, slump in the market, mergers etc..

In a recession, a business might cut back on some staff, whereas a government just carry on as normal, sometimes increasing taxes and awarding themselves perks, expenses and bonuses at the end of the year.

How many businesses do you know that has a thirty odd trillion overdraft? All businesses would close with a government's model because they can't just increase and force sales onto the public.

DOGE has only come about because it's the first time it's had businessmen on the books

My eldest son works for local government in the UK. He said he would welcome DOGE in the UK because councils are so inefficient. He's the only one that starts work at 8am, everyone else wanders in at 9am+. But as he said, it's ran on bureaucracy instead as a business.

One cost is, everyone needs Health & Safety training on.............using a desk. You also can't just move to another office, you can't just unplug a laptop and move, it has to go through a procedure of meetings, photographs etc..
