Vietnam was a third world nation for a long time and as such had the usual poor health conditions typical for third world nations. which means no one can accurately measure or estimate a specific cause and effect of health problems.

When my ex and I were still married, he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. The first thing he saw when the plane landed there was an old man crouched as they did by the side of the runway smoking a bong.

He was stationed in the large base at Cu Chi where he was assigned to type up the Army's version of the action, many lies such as a VW considered an armored vehicle and pornogrphy called "pictures of nurses". When we started withdrawing our troops, those already there still had to serve their 18 months, and he was moved to a station on a graveyard near Hue. They took a lot of incoming fire, and too many of our troops resorted to heroin to cam themselves.

I knew one college classmate who dropped out and was immediately drafted. He died within a week of being stationed on a swift boat. Others were wounded. One high school classmate asked his wife to start divorce proceedings so he would get compassionate leave after he was wounded for the third time.

My ex sent me a package of silk fabric. If I open it, I can still smell Vietnam.
