what comes to your mind if you think of Korea?

I served in the army there in 1963-1964. Horribly backward place, still recovering from the destruction of the Korean War. Trying to 'westernize' however. I felt sorry for the Korean people. Today they are a modern, prosperous nation.

I think of Team Spirit, 1987. I think of the DMZ. I think of Operation Paul Bunyan. I think of Camp Humphrey. I think of Pusan and Itaewon. I have a lot of memories from being there only 30 days.

it may be North or South

whatever you choose

I think of the division
I think of...Kimchi!

An oldtimer I knew fought with the USMC in Korea. Surprisingly , the North Korean people have a real phobia about flame throwers, according to this oldtimer who is now unfortunately deceased..

I served there in the eighties. Wonderful people, wonderful terrain, fine food.

I trained and graduated from an ROK USA ranger course above Ouijong-bu. It was a good, tough course. Not as rough as Air Assault but as good as Airborne. It was known as 유격 (Yugyeok). training.

We could wear the badges in-country but they came off when we left Korea.

I think of the population crash and the failure of their leadership to address it.

Kimchi, fried chicken, bebimbop, funny dramas, my brothers family and then of course the division

I thank you and Woodnutz for your sacrifice and am very grateful for the protection of American Troops of South Korea as a Korean-American!

This is not the first time that I have been aware that some portion of South Koreans are grateful for the alliance we have.

IMO, being grateful to others is a difficult and mature mindset to hold.

This behavior impresses me and in my mind paints South Korea as a very serious country.

I am grateful to the South Koreans who stood besides and fought besides American Troops during the Korean War and the Cold War in general.

The worst place I've ever lived ... longest 4 years of my life.

If you pick up any school textbook in Korea or visit any museum, you would never know The Americans were even there. The South Koreans are taught they fought that war all by themselves.
