Those are a pretty good fifteen. Only one I might take issue with is ET because I've never watched the movie. I might replace that with The Andromeda Strain or even 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Spielberg wins again

Of course, no true top 15 sci fi best movie list can ever truly be complete without mentioning two of the best of ALL time:

1). Metropolis. And

2). Forbidden Planet.

Two GIANTS of science fantasy!

I like Terminator 1 better than 2.. I haven't seen Dark Knight yet. The two I didn't like and walked out on was Dune and Matrix
The lobby poster for Metropolis is a piece of Art I love it.

Cocoon
The Twilight Zone Series
The One Step Beyond Series
Alien
Original Star Wars
Contact (Jodie Foster)
Lord of the Rings
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea
Highlander
Godzilla
Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
The Wizard of Oz
It's A Wonderful Life
Fantasia

Many of these films left an impression on me during early childhood.

I dunno,. The original Dune movie is a fabulous movie, one of my favorites, as is the first Mastrix. Some of the greats.

If you want a real top Sci fi movie list, from my own archives:
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Alien
  • The Andromeda Strain
  • Back To The Future
  • Bladerunner
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind
  • Dune
  • Forbidden Planet
  • Frankenstein
  • The Keep
  • Matrix
  • Metropolis
  • Predator
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Star Wars A New Hope
  • Terminator 2
  • Things To Come

These are the epics. Each represents the top of its particular genre, IMO.

I consider the Star Wars (4,5,6) and Lord of the Rings single movies so

Wizard of Oz (in context a technical visual masterpiece. When released this was a very scary movie and, Margaret Hamilton who created the template for every villain of the last 90 years)
Forbidden Planet (introduced us to Robbie the Robot)
The Tingler (Vincent Price at his best)
The Blob
Night of the Living Dead
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
2001 A Space Odessy
Star Wars
Poltergeist
Terminator 2
Predator 2
Aliens
Enemy Mine
Superman the Movie
Batman (Jack as the Joker)
Lord of the Rings

There has been like a dozen Godzillas. The one I thought really hit the mark was the one made in 2014. It deserves a really good video sound system with subsonic bass. It practically has you hiding under your bed.
I was looking back into my childhood at the very first one I saw. Left an impression. The original King Kong was similar. Both black and white and both used archaic film tricks but as a kid ... my eyes were glued.

Great list. And Forbidden Planet is really good especially for that era.

2 very good sci fi movies from around the same time are Gattaca, and Pitch Black.

I'm getting a new, bigger TV for my home theater tomorrow along with a new set for the bedroom. The bedroom is just a regular LED TV but the big set is state of the art. Probably one of the first things I'm going to do that I've been meaning to do for a long time is sit down and re-watch all of the classics on my list; the new TV should be like seeing this stuff all over for the first time again looking better than ever.

This isn't the review forum so you need to narrow the definition between Sci/Fi and..fantasy. It's all fantasy but it's not necessarily sci/fi.
