Number 1:
Currently, Trump and Clinton have historically high negative ratings.
Clinton is running against Trump, so she gets negative ratings from his voters.
Clinton is running against Sanders, so she gets negative ratings from his voters.
She has 30 years of smears from the GOP.
The press has given her more negative press than anyone else, which has been posted before so it's no surprise at this point she would have such high negative ratings.
Fewer Clinton supporters said they would vote for Obama at this same time in 2008 but eventually became very supportive.
Donald Trump is not really running against anyone right now. Bernie and Hillary are running against each other and yet, Trump's negatives are the highest of all.
Bernie has been handled with kid gloves by the press. The press simply refuses to vet him. When he was given that devastating interview by the NY Daily news, other media complained the "right" questions weren't being asked when Bernie gave answers like "I don't know", "It has to be studied" and "Someone help me out here". With Trump as an opponent, Bernie can't count on the "right" questions. It's the job of the candidate to be prepared. Worse, Bernie's wife has been identified as the cause for ruining and closing an entire college and profiting from it. Imagine what Trump could do with that? Think Bill. Then there is the admiration Bernie has for brutal dictator Fidel Castro, and his problem with socialism, as in Union of Soviet Socialists Republic.
Number 2: Third Party Candidate
For Republicans, I don't think it's possible. The GOP base is behind Donald Trump. It's the phrase "Make America Great Again" which they translate into "When Only Whites Had all the Power". The GOP has been carefully cultivating a base that believes the country has changed so much, we need to tear everything down and start over. Get rid of Hispanics would help. Let the states handle education so children could learn REAL history, like Noah and a 6,000 year old Earth and normal math that doesn't have letters instead of numbers.
Republican calls algebra "fuzzy math" for using letters with numbers.
Since Bernie refuses to raise money for the DNC and refuses to support any other Democratic Candidate, the danger of a third party comes from him. Even three million votes behind he somehow thinks he should be the nominee. He is surrounded by wildly screaming and enthusiastic children. He thinks that somehow translates into deserving. He could run third party and then blame the landslide loss on Hillary Clinton. He seems to be saying: I'm more popular so I should be the nominee. He lost Kentucky and Nebraska and never mentions either in his "momentum" claim.
So when they say Clinton gets 43% but Trump gets 46%, Clinton is only getting Democrats and not independents. But Trump isn't get independents either.
