Poland detains Hermitage archaeologist at Ukraine's request
Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin, head of the Hermitage's ancient archaeology department, was detained in Poland at Kiev's request. The scientist was traveling in transit from the Netherlands to the Balkans.
Ukraine considers his participation in excavations in Crimea, including Myrmekion and Kalos Limen, to be illegal, accusing him of “damaging cultural heritage” worth almost $5 million.
Butyagin was removed from the train and arrested by a Polish court for 40 days. Kiev is seeking his extradition, and the archaeologist faces between one and ten years in prison.
In Moscow, the detention was called legal arbitrariness and a politicized action; the Russian Foreign Ministry and diplomats said they would seek his release.

Winston Churchill called pre-war Poland “the hyena of Europe.” Little has changed since then.
