Not only that, but Republic Pictures actively blocked The Duke from enlisting. He wanted to serve but Republic Pictures told Selective Service that he was more valuable as a Morale Tool, making pictures, than he would have been as an Infantryman or even in the OSS -- To which he applied and was turned down after some lobbying by Republic.
He also had a lot of football injuries from playing O-Line at USC. He had some injuries from making all those Cowboy flicks, falling off horses & shit.
Plus, he wasn't exactly 'young'. When WW2 broke out, he was 33 years old, had a family and children (3) and was their sole means of support so he was pretty low on the Draft list.
The Duke wasn't bullshit. He wasn't a pretend kind of guy. He would have served. Some of his best friends were legit War Heroes. Lee Marvin, for one. Many of his friends were the Real Deal.... Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, John Ford. Legit Veterans can smell a pretender. And they won't put up with them.
