The way I see it, there were actually TWO protest votes.

The Republicans tossed aside the establishment and nominated, then supported an outsider candidate. That took courage.

The Liberals, especially Bernie supporters, ALSO gave the finger to THEIR establishment by NOT voting for the establishments hand picked and preferential candidate...either voting for Trump, or voting third party or simply staying home. For the Progressives, this took even MORE courage...because at least the Republicans had a chance of success. By taking a moral stand and refusing to allow the DNC to screw them over...they knew they were going to potentially cede the country to the opposition.

That's the way I see it. YMMV.
