Reservists have been a strong voice in Israel’s protest movement since prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right and religious coalition announced sweeping judicial changes shortly after taking office in December. Proponents of the overhaul believe it is needed to counter a perceived leftwing bias in the unelected court’s decisions, while critics say it will lead to democratic backsliding, such as that seen in Hungary and Turkey.

Bad news for Bibi and his right wing savages, Good news for Palestinians as the slaughter might abate.

I wonder why the right wing authoritarians always have to control every aspect of life ? Independent voices have to be crushed for the good of the party.

All of this nonsense is subsidised by Us taxpayers. Socialism in action ?

Guess where Trump gets his ideas?

The article cites Turkey and Hungary as examples.. I am not sure that Israelis would put up with that level of corruption.
The protests have been huge and have been going on for some time. Surprised there isnt a thread already.
.
The US is getting a taste for it in Florida.

As I understand it, the Israeli Supreme Court is not bound to any document or set of documents (as with the U.S. Constitution), and can rule against any law or policy that they deem unsuitable. The new legislation requires them to follow existing laws and the Israeli "constitution" or whatever its called.

While it can be perceived as the Prime Minister doing something to save his own butt, the principle is valid.

In the U.S., we had the Warren Court that did whatever the fuck they wanted to do - Constitution be damned - and we are 60 years later, still trying to dig out of that mess (affirmative action, a "right" to get an abortion, protection of porn through the First Amendment, etc.).

Do you know anything about the yellow fever epidemics or the Spanish influenza?

Israelis dont seem to be excited about it. When your army is threatening to mutuny there is obviously an issue.

Is that the problem? Is Israel going hard right?
Apparently. I am sure that they have a mandate of some sort.
But we see the protests every day. It is definitely not popular.
There is a problem when politicians control the judiciary.
