For those that had no means to get there the SD, town PD, VFD, and even the cab companies would deliver the boxes. Of course those that received the boxes back then were truly destitute.

Then the grocery lobby cried foul saying they were losing business and that is how the early food stamp program came about....And it went down hill from there.

Today Walmart redeems 25% of SNAP in their stores. You don't think the grocery lobby be like it is but it do.

Most small towns had a Salvation Army back in the day. If memory serves they were associated with the Pentecostal church which it adjoined at the time.

It needs to move to the next phase IMO. People needing food assistance should have food delivered to them. Simple box of food staples delivered once a month. To qualify each month they should be required to submit proof, pics, they're using the food, other wise it's cut off.

They'd probably cut themselves and bleed out while trying to open a can of Spam.

Fresh produce in season
always potatoes, carrots, and onions
Salt and pepper plus other spices.

#11 can of unsalted peanuts

LOL....Folks used to open the can of peanuts, salt them, and set them on a warm corner of a wood cook stove. The warmth would draw out the oil in the peanuts and boom, very good salted peanuts!

I vaguely remember the Christmas box we got from the SA, the year my dad died, but I vividly remember sweet potatoes, brown sugar and marshmallows, which went into candied sweet potatoes.


A mother on WIC gets:

Fruits and Vegetables
Juice
Milk and Milk Substitutions
Infant Foods
Infant Formula
Breakfast Cereals
Whole Wheat Bread
Whole Grain Bread
Canned
Fish
Legumes
Eggs

Yes, a woman with children can be on both programs at the same time.

WIC is part of SNAP. The two largest groups of SNAP recipients are old people and single parents. WIC is baby food, formula, stuff like that. WIC is kind of a supplement to basic SNAP.

Convenience store clerk checking in after my 8-hour shift: The number was down by about half of what we do on a usual Saturday. I did about 5 transactions of EBT to who still had funds in their accounts today. All low-income white folks, as there aren't many black folks here and the only Mexicans still left here are legal. You could multiply that number of EBT transactions times four, which was the average number of open registers we had going throughout the day.

Probably sold more beer than anything, as there are still a lot of working Mexicans in this little town of 5k people. I think a couple of them are peddling it by the bottle to their compadres, as they keep coming back for more. Not much we can do about that.

It's 9:19 PM and I'm home listening to the scanner. It's getting pretty lit in town now.
