A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of igniting a blaze that burned several homes and prompted evacuation orders for thousands of residents in Southern California, officials said.

Brandon N. McGlover, of Temecula, was booked on suspicion of setting five fires, including one that threatened about 600 homes in the San Jacinto Mountains east of Los Angeles, state fire officials said.

McGlover was being held in the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, according to jail records, and was expected to appear in court Friday morning, according to the Desert Sun.

One of the fires erupted Wednesday afternoon and quickly spread to 7.5 square miles, fueled by dry brush and trees in rugged terrain.

The so-called Cranston Fire burned in and around San Bernardino National Forest, forcing officials to order about 3,200 people to evacuate from Idyllwild and surrounding communities, which are home to about 12,000 residents, Reuters reported.

Perhaps the only individual to advocate the change was Frank Luntz, a Republican political strategist and global warming skeptic, who used focus group results to determine that the term 'climate change' is less frightening to the general public than 'global warming'.
