We should have seen the writing on the wall ten years ago and got out then.

A lot of flawed thoughts posted above.

Now for some reality.

9/11 was hatched in Afghanistan. We warned the taliban who at that time controlled Pakistan either to kick out the al-quada or we would do it. They replied Al-quada was their guests.

Thus bush was right to go in there and kill the cockroaches. But he should not have stopped there....that was his mistake.

He should have followed them into the tribal lands and got rid of all of them. That was our failure.

I do not want to hear any b.s. about offending Pakistan who wound up harboring bin laden.

Now the question is will the taliban once again allow al-quaida and others to come back in and start planning terroristic attacks against America once again.

You guys are playing checkers whilst the taliban and al-quaida are playing chess.

9/11 was not hatched in Afghanistan.. OBL was also in Sudan, Pakistan and Yemen.

One of the reasons the Taliban were finding it so easy to advance on Kabul was the fact we were down to a token force by the end of April. We only had about 2,500 troops in country when Biden pulled the plug. For all intents and purposes we were already 'out'.
You are forgetting that the well armed Afghanistan Army of 300,000 should have replaced US troops in the fight, However the that the well armed Afghanistan Army of 300,000 wee nothing but cowards and threw down their weapons at the first sign of a fight,

The Taliban agreed to a peaceful transition of power.. there's a void now since the Afghani president fled the country.

IMHO, we established too many goals that had little to do with the reason we were there such as, setting up and protecting a new government that was corrupt and incompetent, seeding democratic principals, building an Afghan military, converting an Islamic educational system into a secular system, establishing equal rights, building trade, and dealing with the opium poppy harvest. Somewhere among all of this, getting the bad guys was no longer a priority.

This is typical in limited wars when you occupy a country, you neither win nor lose. You fight, you die, you spend tons of money, and then you go home and ask your self, what was that all about.
I think Bush was operating under the delusion of a Democratic Domino Theory.

Set up western Democracies in Afghanistan and Iraq and Iran and Middle East nations will demand the same and revolt.

The Taliban were seen as Robin Hoods by the people when the warlords were kidnapping their daughters, hijacking trucks and producing Opium. Maybe we need to rethink this.

Seems reasonable as any other explantion

The September 11 plot demonstrated that al-Qaeda was an organization of global reach. The plot played out across the globe with planning meetings in Malaysia, operatives taking flight lessons in the United States, coordination by plot leaders based in Hamburg, Germany, money transfers from Dubai, and recruitment of suicide operatives from countries around the Middle East—all activities that were ultimately overseen by al-Qaeda’s leaders in Afghanistan.

We attacked Afghanistan because the taliban refused to kick out Al-Qaeda and Osama and alquada were responsible for the 9/11 plot which they admitted.

Al Qaeda and OBL were always outsiders in Afghanistan.

Nope. I remember when they stopped the rapes, truck hijackings and Opium production.
Sure you do...
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- In radio broadcasts and sermons, Taliban propagandists have been promoting themselves as Islamic Robin Hoods, defending Pakistan's rural poor.

And we wasted billions of dollars and thousands of American lives only to have things revert to what they were 20 years ago.

It wasn't worth it.

True but the Taliban considered them honored guests and ignored warnings from the U.S. if they did not force Alquada out of afghanistan we would.

Thus they brought disaster upon themselves by welcoming and supporting terrorists.

That cannot be proved...we busted up the alquada organization in afghanistan and forced them to flee to the tribal lands in N Pakistan where without the support of a nation state they were far less effective.

Who knows what other attacks they may have hatched and carried out if they had been able to stay in Afghanistan

U.S.-led attack on Afghanistan begins
