After having started a war that they believed that they would win, the Democrat administration no longer
in situ, realized that the expected alliance with England would not occur, threw in the towel.
Republicans, having- at great cost- pried their slaves away from them, went on to memorialize the new freedom of African Americans, with amendments to the Constitution.
How the war began:
1. Major Robert Anderson and 85 men were stranded in Fort Sumter.
2. Surrounding him were hundreds of militiamen and coastal guns.
3. Lincoln refused to give the fort up, but the fort was running out of food: if he sent a supply convoy into Charleston Bay, he would be blamed for starting the war.....but how could he give in, and give up the fort?
4. William Seward tried to undermine Lincoln....telling Lincoln to give up the fort for 'goodwill.'
5. On April 5, Lincoln dispatched a fleet of supply ships with the proviso that was relayed to Jefferson Davis: the vessels would be unarmed, with the only cargo "food for hungry men."
6. Firing on the defenseless ships would have been an act of war by the Confederacy.
7. On Tuesday, April 9, Davis held a cabinet meeting, deciding on war. Three days later, and hours before the ships would arrive....the Southern forces attacked the fort.

The great irony of history is that the Democrats have been able to hide their guilt and pretend that the other side is responsible for the their ubiquitous claim....'racism.'
What a weird post and thread. I will answer only once because after all this is a PC thread- so I don't expect actual discourse.
There was no 'Democratic administration' in the Confederate States of America- because political parties were banned in their constitution. While it is true that the administration consisted of many former Democrats- after 4 years of war, can't really call them that anymore.
And of course the new Republican Party absolutely deserved credit for preventing the breakup of the United States. But a few points that need to be mentioned:
a) Republicans didn't go into the war to free the slaves- they went into the war to keep the Union intact. Lincoln was very clear he would welcome the Confederate states back with slavery if they ended the rebellion- and only issued the Emancipation proclamation after he realized that was not going to happen. Lincoln was for ending slavery- but more important to him was preserving the Union.
b) Republicans were just as racist as Democrats- in 1860 by our standards, Lincoln was very racist- but he also was opposed to slavery. Frankly by our standards virtually everyone except perhaps some Quakers were racists in 1860.
c) The Confederate States absolutely started the Civil War.
d) The Americans now embracing Confederate heritage in America are virtually all Republicans. While the descendents of the slaves are now virtually all Democrats. Which seems to indicate that there was a change in political landscape.
e) If you believe that either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party of today is the same as those parties were in 1860- you are an idiot.
