Actually it was, it was an in kind contribution in violation of campaign finance laws.

Now, if Cohen, Trump, and Daniels had arranged the NDA and Trump paid the money himself from personal funds. That wouldn't have been a campaign violation by Cohen and there wouldn't be the current legal jeopardy for Trump. But instead of doing it legally, they used a money laundering scheme were Cohen made the payments and later falsified business records.
