Hell yes it is vital.Wait...so torture is necessary to get vital information but the ability to descript phones isn't?
I'm not sure why you find this so perplexing. The U.S. government has no authority over the American people outside of what is described in the U.S. Constitution. So demanding the ability to access my phone, computer, etc. without a warrant - major violation of the 4th Amendment. Torturing idiot muslims? Ok. Even encouraged (by intelligent, informed, patriotic Americans).
Any person should be free from the prospect of torture. That is a human right.
A kidnapper has your child. Information as to the location is on a phone. Now do you want to be able to decrypt it?
