Watermelon!

Never liked watermelon.

Back in the day when watermelons were regularly sweet, wet and red, a hefty bite or three would load up the kids' mouths with enough watermelon seeds to turn us into tommy guns!

Don't even get me STARTED on collared greens.

Also, I agree. Salt on watermelon is like ketchup on ...

well ...

filet mignon.

Ketchup works fine on pancakes though.

You people are all racists! Hate filled racists! ALL of you!

But I will neevr phaer yuo!

I really don't like watermelon much...I'll eat it, but it's certainly not tops on my list~
I like it to be cold if I am going to eat it, very cold...seedless preferred..and then I will eat a small bit.
But no damn salt! WTF is up with that??

It is the best part of summer.

It's a yankee thing, my mom used to salt watermelon and cantaloupe. Not only that when she cooked she salted the foods while cooking and we salted them at the table before eating. Bleck!!

I have never eaten a table -- with or without salt.

My mom always did that too. I only salt things like spuds, tomatos or pasta while cooking. Cripes she used to add salt to beans and corn while they were cooking then we'd salt it again at the table. We use way less salt than my parents did.

Just because one thread will simply never do.

We need more Watermelon discussions.

Obviously.

The Wife made watermelon salad the other day. I was skeptical at first, but it was pretty good.

Ingredients

1 (5-pound) watermelon
1 Vidalia or other sweet onion
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
6 whole mint sprigs

Directions

Cut the flesh from the melon and cut into bite size pieces, removing and discarding the seeds, and set aside. Peel and slice the onion into rings.

In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, salt, pepper, and whisk until salt is dissolved. Slowly whisk in the olive oil, a few drops at a time. Add in the chopped mint, taste, and adjust seasonings.

In a large bowl, combine the melon, onion, and feta. Pour the dressing over the melon mixture and toss gently until everything is coated and evenly mixed. Garnish with mint sprigs.

To serve, divide salad among individual plates and garnish with mint leaves.
