Washington Redskins To Change Team Name

Yet teams change their name all the time. Its not that much of a big deal. Unless you make it a big deal. They will still come especially if you win.

Not teams that have maintained a name, an image, a fight song and a fan base for 87 years. This would be like asking the NY Yankees or Boston Red Sox to change their name.

okay it is hard but NY Yankees were originally named the Baltimore Orioles but change their name when they moved to New York .

Were they called the Washington Red's, Whites, Blue's I can't see a problem. There may be a problem with 'skins' if people of Indigenous descent object fair enough just drop the 'skins'
If not then anyone who objects saying its offensive they should be made to prove it or shut up its just their opinion.

It’s actually been through the courts several times. Most recently there was a push to deny them renewal of their trademarks as the US Trademark laws do not allow licensing or any racist or derogatory term or image. The team won the case and maintained the trademarks.

“Reds” would not work as the word has a significant connotation of Soviet or Communist influence. Especially around the political center of Washington.,

Don't know why they call themselves Redskins anyway if it it no way represents their Club or fans. In England teams are usually just named after the town/city which may be added. or FC Football club, or UTD United. Washington UTD sounds good. Rovers, Athletic. All these are neutral. Arsenal the club I support were founded from workers at a WWI munitions factory. Nicknamed The Gunners.

There’s a long history in America of using nicknames and mascots for spots teams. Especially when there multiple teams in the same city. As most of our pro sports grew out of local leagues the nicknames and mascots were necessary to tell teams apart. The tradition continues to this day.

I followEnglidh and German leagues a little, as more Americans are playing over there now. It’s odd to me to see just the FC or United or whatever after team locations. Hell, even most MLS teams have a mascot or logo of some sort.
I thought red was the colour of the Republican Party? Its only associated with Communism because people allow it to be - take ownership!

London has lots of highly ranked teams:-
Arsenal Nicknamed The Gunners
Tottenham Hotspur Relates to the Spurs worn by Cavalrymen. There was a Barracks there.
Chelsea FC
Crystal Palace FC
West Ham FC
Brentford FC
Millwall FC

London in not mentioned but all the above except Arsenal are districts or small towns within the Greater London Area. Crystal Palace was built in 1850's to house the Great Exhibition
that burnt down later.
Manchester Utd is nicknamed because of their Red & Black strip 'The Red Devils'.
All you have to do is drop 'Redskins' to an unofficial nickname. The fans can still chant it.

Derogatory name for early patriot's given to them by the British. Yankee is the same as the term "jerk off" that we use today. Great term for that franchise.

Washington Redskins To Change Team Name

“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,” the team said in a statement Friday.

Since the owner is Jewish - here is my suggestion:

Red was the color of Marxist revolutionaries since the First International in 19th century.

The Yankees changed their name 107 years ago. That’s not a meaningful example.

I will not, under any circumstances, root for a team not named the Washington Redskins.

Atlanta Braves
Chicago Blackhawks
Cleveland Indians
San Diego Padres
Kansas City Chiefs
San Diego State Aztecs

All need to be changed...
Ummmm...NO!

Sorry, gotta' do it...
I wonder when the animal rights idiots are going to get involved and demand the Cubs, Bears, Cardinals, Bruins, Wolverines, Badgers. Golden Gophers, Beavers, Duck's, Lions, Tigers, etc. must all change their names because it exploits animals. Democrats will probably make it a plank in their platform.

Go Spurs! But, this is the United States of America, NEVER cave-in to PC terrorist.

Actually, it looks like FedEx has sent a request that the name be changed. The owner of the team, Dan Snyder, has always said he would never change the name...

FedEx asks Washington Redskins to change team name amid pushback from investors
FedEx investors didn't buy naming rights. Screw them.

From my link:

"In 1999, FedEx became the naming rights partner for the Redskins' home stadium on a 27-year deal worth $205 million. FedEx Chairman and CEO Fred Smith holds an ownership stake in the NFL franchise."

If FedEx decides to sever ties with the Redskins over this, that's gonna' hurt.

Nike has also removed any reference to the Redskins from their website. Every other NFL team is listed:

Nike removes Redskins name, apparel from its website
I will never use FedEx again. I stopped watching NFL years ago because of their ignorant shit. About ready to stop watching college football as well.

What the fuck has it got to do with Marxist/Leninism ? You dumb twat!

Actually this whole thing IS about Socislism, Political Correctness and the idea that nobody can ever be offended.

That’s all the 25+ year movement to change this team’s name is all about... making people feel good because they’ve forced the team to change a name those people find offensive; even though they have no stake In the team or its name.

You leftist will crap your pants if a liberal named this team it's name years ago, and all in order to show the Indian tribes that they are still the formidable warriors that they were during the battle of say "the little big horn" etc. And it created a rival between the Dallas cowboys and the skins in which gave everyone a chance to root for either team in a symbolic way, and giving a fun history lesson of how we all once fought in battles against each other, but finally recognized just how stupid fighting was when we took it to the fields in peace, but never forgetting the heroic efforts that were put forth by those who will never be forgotten for their warrior strength and stamina given for their side.

It's all in fun now, and everybody understands this, and no one is putting anyone down for these names, the history etc.

Get over it snowflakes. Good grief.
I might be a socialist but I'm not in favour of all this PC in regard to banning or removing things. They simply represent our history 'warts n all'.

The most stupid is removing films like 'Gone With The Wind'. On the basis it is racist. That is ridiculous it simply depicted life as it was for a certain group of people during the Civil War.
The last thing we should be doing is pretending that sort of story never happened.

Socialists have or should have better thing to do.

Red and Blue are used to denote the parties in internal politics. On a grand scale “Red” is used forRussia or the former Soviet Union. The anti-Comminist movements of the 1950s is called the “Red Scare”.

The EPL teams use their neighborhoods to differentiate themselves instead of mascots. Part of it here has also been the use of mascots/logos sort of like medieval livery... to inspire players and fans on and off the field... Bears, Lions, Raiders, Warriors, etc... or local flavor... 49ers, Ravens, Vikings, etc...

The Redskins name... the team was purchased by George Preston Marshall as the Boston Braves (another native american reference). Marshall wanted a new name for the team and chose Redskins. The logo has changed multiple times over the years.

WAS the colour! Red is the colour of a lot of things every team that play in red in England fans will chant "come on you reds!" feck all to do with communism. As I said Red is the colour of the Republicans. So in the US socialism must be Blue!

Correct. The color confusion was a gift from 1980s media. When party colors were assigned for broadcast election coverage Democrats, who were already known as "Reds" because of the connection with Marxism, were assigned blue in an attempt to sever that connection. It didn't work.

Why not call them Mohicans its the name of the tribe that was in and around New York and it sounds more respectful!
