Americans killed by Iran's proxies
Since the 1980s, Iranian-backed proxy groups have been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American service members and civilians. According to the U.S. Department of Defense and various reports, these proxies—including groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and Kata'ib Hezbollah—have carried out numerous lethal attacks across the Middle East.
Major Historical Incidents
- 1983 Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing: An Iran-backed group, the predecessor to Hezbollah, carried out a suicide truck bombing that killed 241 U.S. service members.
- 1983 U.S. Embassy Bombing in Beirut: A similar group bombed the embassy, killing 63 people, including 17 Americans.
- 1996 Khobar Towers Bombing: Hezbollah al-Hejaz, a Saudi-based group with strong ties to Iran's IRGC, detonated a truck bomb that killed 19 U.S. Air Force members.

Conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (2003–2011)
- Iraq War: The Pentagon has stated that Iran-backed Shia militias were responsible for the deaths of at least 603 to 608 U.S. service members in Iraq. This accounted for roughly 17% of all U.S. deaths in the country during that period, often caused by Iranian-supplied explosively formed penetrators (EFPs).
- Afghanistan: Iran provided weapons and funding to select Taliban factions, contributing to deadly attacks on U.S. and NATO coalition troops.

Recent and Ongoing Attacks (2023–2026)
- October 7 Hamas Attack (2023): Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists killed 46 Americans during the massacre in Israel.
- Tower 22 Attack (January 2024): A drone launched by Kata'ib Hezbollah struck a U.S. base in Jordan, killing three U.S. service members and wounding more than 40.
- March 2023 Syria Strike: An Iranian drone attack killed one American contractor at a coalition base.
- Operation Epic Fury (March 2026): During current escalations following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the U.S. military has confirmed three to four American service members have been killed in retaliatory strikes by Iranian-backed militias.
