Voting rights advocates say Trump's executive order requiring proof of citizenship 'could block millions from voting'. Isn't that the point?

1.67 million Iowans voted in 2024….35 were not citizens. I suspect a couple of dozen voters were dead as well.

That is not even statistically meaningful, certainly not enough to potentially disenfranchise legitimate voters.

Trump's order will not be enforceable. The election clause in the constitution squarely makes states responsible for elections in their state: "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State Legislature. When Democrats tried to impose federal mandate on elections, republicans fought and won using the Election Clause.

Yes, voter suppression is the point.

I'm surprised you are admitting it though.

Well, yeah.

And that is why Dems be big mad. And naturally, they're suing over it.

I said the same thing in a post in some thread. Anyone can get an ID, no matter how poor you are, very easily and it's not very expensive. Just about everyone everywhere needs an ID for all sorts of things and has ID's already. The only people affected by this law are illegals who don't want to let the government know their names and addresses by getting an ID.

What law? This may come as a surprise to you and Trump but his executive orders are not laws. They are directives to federal departments and federal agencies.

In the US there is nothing in the constitution or the amendments that require citizenship to vote. However, the election clause allows the states to determine who can vote and who can't.

If the deep red states want to make it harder for their people to vote which will reduce turnout, more power to them.

Thanks for admitting that you want blue states to let illegals vote. It took some real courage to admit that. Most dems just dance around the issue.

Photo ID increased turnout in Georgia.

It is well understood that only a citizen can vote. Or should we allow mail-in ballots from China and India?

That's exactly the point. Only a woke Democrat could object to laws/rules/policies in place limiting voting rights to U.S. citizens. That they object to that is clear evidence that they want America as we know it completely destroyed so they can make it into whatever image they want it to be. (Note: that image is way WAY different than the MAGA vision of a strong, free, secure America with liberty, choices, options, opportunity, and an ability to prosper for all.)

Of course, I didn't say or imply that. Making it more difficult to vote effects those on both the right and left.

Today more that every, undocumented immigrates are hunkering down. The threat of mass deportations has them skipping work, stocking up on groceries, and avoiding public places. It is very unlikely that any undocumented immigrant is going to be headed polls.

That is not quite true. Some areas allow non-citizens to vote in local elections. It is up to the state to determine who can and can not vote.

Those jurisdictions are idiots, and they cheapen the value of citizenship.

And they cannot permit non-citizens to vote in Federal elections.

"Predictably, you will say that's no big deal."

Yup, I called it.

Voter ID laws won't disenfranchise legitimate voters.
