It used to be that homosexuality was considered a mental illness. Then the APA decided that "I think it's icky" wasn't a good enough reason.

If a trans person doesn't identify with the gender they were born with, but can otherwise function in life, by holding down jobs, getting educations, etc., then they aren't mentally ill... you just are a bigot.

We perform reconstructive surgery on children all the time... to correct birth defects.

Now, personally, I would be reluctant to perform such a surgery on a minor, unless there was clear diagnosis of Gender dysphoria.
