Verizon Communications is planning to cut roughly 15,000 jobs, looking to reduce costs as it contends with increased competition for wireless service and home internet, according to people familiar with the matter.

The cuts, the largest ever for the carrier, are set to take place in the next week, the people said. The majority of the reduction is expected to be made through layoffs.

Goodness, how bad do you have to run a company to have 15,000 more employees than you need?
That said 100K employees so a 15% reduction is not a huge haircut I guess.

BTW....Before you get too teary-eyed.....

They were one of the ones that took money for rural broadband and other gov money to build out networks and barely connected anyone.

They also ran the Obamacare website that didn't work when it launched.

Trump's economy is characterized by nothing but job loses all around.

We're so fucked!!

People are leaving Verizon. Its wayyyy too expensive compared to many others. Hek, I think they dont even have the best coverage area anymore.
I pay 30 a month for unlimited everything. Even hotspot. Plus 16 for my phone. On verizon, I was paying 115 plus my phone payment. And my hotspot is so strong, I can run three or 4 devices off of it.
EDIT: Its 35 now after adding 5G

Remember, Verizon is really a conglomeration of Bell Atlantic (one of the old Baby Bells) and GTE. Fully unionized. Big salary, big benefits, and first on the block.

But the competition (like Consumer Cellular) is killing them now, so, time to tighten the belt.

Only the best for me, so I currently have Verizon.

But they are ******* expensive.

Who's your provider?

Visible. And ironically, it runs off Verizon towers

Those 15,000 jobs probably amount to about 1.5 billion in savings. BTW, the reason why all of the competitive carriers use Verizon towers is because the government mandated that the phone company (Verizon) not be a monopoly and share resources as per the Telecom Act of 1996. Mind you, the Verizon network was essentially built from public funds, so remains the only regulated company in the telecom industry.

I was thinking about doing something like that, use one of the lower tiers that actually is Verizon in disguise.

Let me see something...

Thats a great rate. Whos the carrier? We pay $200 per month unlimited. We dont do anything but call and a little internet on our wireless. Sounds like we are throwing away $.
