But that's not what was testified at the trial. The testimony was that when Austin told Karmelo he had to leave the tent, Karmelo put his hand in his bag and dared Austin to put his hands on him.

Austin made no threatening moves nor did he say anything threatening before Karmelo said this. It's part of the reason the jury didn't buy his self defense claim.
