The incident occurred in April 2025 during a track and field competition. The Black man stabbed the teenager in the chest in the stands. He claimed self-defense, but the jury didn't believe his lie.

Following the verdict, hysteria erupted outside the courtroom from Black activists, including Black Lives Matter and the Black Panthers. They demanded the killer's release, held signs reading "Free Carmelo," mocked the victim's family, claimed Carmelo should have killed Austin's brother, and threatened a race war if convicted.
