If he had been here for decades, why did he not become legal? I mean holy hell, he has been here for 25-30 years and never once tried to become legal?

Sorry, I have absolutely no pity for those that have done nothing to get themselves legalized. I mean, we had a hell of a lot of programs just for that during the Obama Administration. And apparently what we are seeing is that a hell of a lot of people simply ignored them and did not a damned thing proactively in order to prevent this from happening.

Just as I have absolutely no pity for those that served and never became citizens, who then later broke the law like drug trafficking so were deported after their time in jail. That was all of your own making, you come to this country you follow the laws or go home.

That said, I think the Marine failed his dad. If my parents were here illegal and I was an adult, I would make getting them squared away a #1 priority even if it meant them going back to Mexico and me supporting them until they could get in legit.

And this is absolutely the only correct answer.

Not all that long ago there were multiple programs put in place for people to become legal residents. And if somebody did not take advantage of those programs, I have absolutely no pity on them. They had every opportunity to do things the right way, and they did not.
