I have an observation to make about many college-educated people in the US.

My city is limping and I think I know why. At some point around 1957 the Russians launched a beachball sized contraption with antennae they called Sputnik. It went into orbit and made a beep. The beep could be detected by radio, and the little sphere could be seen on radar. It could be viewed by a naked eye if the viewer was young enough. This event sent the hierarchy of the US into apoplexy! Stark warnings appeared: “The Russians are dropping us like a bad habit in math and science!” “We need to catch up by sending everyone to college!”

Math and engineering institutions did not change much, but liberal arts colleges like the one in my city began popping up on every street corner. They became as common as the phone booths of the 50’s and 60’s. Academics came out of the woodwork like cockroaches from under a kitchen sink. They began offering all kinds of idiosyncratic educational content after most curriculums were dumbed down to accommodate student bodies that were never college material in the original sense. Four extra years of high school became the norm at most liberal arts campuses, and a cottage industry of schizophrenic re-education gripped the country like the brain damage that comes with lead exposure.

Why would this happen? Well, do you think the purpose of education in America shifted from producing useful, trained citizens to maintaining guaranteed employment for educators if there were enough suckers to line up for the plan? The bizarre rabbit holes US education has gone down offer a sobering indictment of a system that has gone off the rails! Political conspiratorial propagandizing quickly took over in education, and things like Diversity, equity and Inclusion stood in for standard training. Lunacy like toxic masculinity and women’s studies, divided minds and pitted the sexes against one another. The young are as lonely and rudderless as ever. This has done real damage.

American education has broadsided America in a way the Russians never dreamed of. When a farmer buys manure from a manure salesman, he knows what he is getting. But when US liberal arts colleges repackage manure and sell it to students as food, we are in trouble as a nation.

Maybe it’s time to make some real changes before it is too late.

So what do you propose to do about it?

My brother was a certified welder. When he retired he answered and ad for Daytona State College as a welding instructor. He became involved in helping to build their welding program. He got pomoted and became a leading teacher. But after ten years he is giving it up because out of every class of 25 only about 4 actually progress to become certified welders. The problem? The kids lack basic math skills. When I say basic, I mean that. Many have no undstanding of fractions or even simple addition or subtraction. He brought it up and was told to just move them along. He is giving it up.

In our world it is ok to be a jack of all trades with a wide understanding of many things. But you need to be the master of one so you can fall back on it when you are useful to society. Remember in school when you had to do all that math in your head? 2x2=4, 3x3=9, 4x4=16? That is not being done today in too many schools. It is racist aparently.

Mike Rowe has been alerting us to this for a long time. Education has got to get back to basics.

How do you know this? I did it in my education and I taught it for 21 years. Whether they remembered it or not is on them, not me.

My son is a machinist instructor. He has the same complaints as Raynine's brother.
