The last time lava threatened Puna was in 2014, when a flow closed roads for weeks in Pahoa, forced evacuations and claimed several structures, including one home.
I'll swear I just said that... National Guard was just called out... Leilani Estates has a mandatory evacuation as of 1800 hrs HST... This is a subdivision where homes are located...
Fox News just reported that the magma flow has reached the housing area nearest it and it appears that it will take the whole subdivision and possibly an older one nearer the ocean as the old conduit venting magma to the ocean has collapsed and plugged forcing the flow above ground.Yeah all the time .

PUNA (KHON2) - Hawaii County Civil Defense is responding to what is now a volcanic eruption in the lower Puna area.
Lava has reached the surface of Leilani Estates with heavy smoke and spewing ash filling the neighborhood. Maija Stenback shared video of lava exploding out of Mohala Street.
All residents in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens Subdivisions are required to evacuate.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter for affected residents at Pahoa Community Center, 15-3022 Kauhale Street. Keaau Community Center will open for additional shelter needs.
Residents should bring a supply kit that includes medicine, food, and items for comfort if possible.
The intersection at Highway 132 and Pohoiki Road is now closed to allow evacuation efforts to proceed.

Most of these home are self financed and have no insurance because of the location, so what these folks are able gather is what they have...
