The 1979 Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' experienced a similar phenomenon when fundamentalist xtians created an uproar that ended up creating massive buzz for what was one of the groups lowest budget, least well publicized films.

Without the xtian backlash, the film would have been a dismal box-office failure.
