Leaders of Russia’s BRICS allies met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Jeddah on August 6 and agreed that Ukraine’s territorial integrity must be at the heart of any peace deal with Russia to end the war.

Senior officials from around 40 countries, including the US, China, and India, gathered in Saudi Arabia for talks aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to Russia's war in Ukraine. Russia was not invited.

In what appears to be a blow for Russian President Vladimir Putin, his erstwhile allies backed a peace plan blueprint that would in effect call for Russian troops to withdraw from all of Ukraine’s territory as part of a peace deal. However, the results of the meeting are non-binding and will have no practical effect on ending the war for the meantime.

The participants of the meeting in Saudi Arabia regarding the settlement of the war in Ukraine reached an agreement on respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, and this should be at the centre of any peace agreement, Italy’s Corriere della Sera reported.

Russia is completely alone in the world.

North Korea may be a Russian ally despite some evidence it might be selling missiles to Ukraine, too, but the rest is just your wish list.

Having something called peace talks in KSA without invite Russia is some pointless crap. Everybody could have phoned it in.

Not at all. It showed there is virtually no support at all in the world be Russia to keep any part of Ukraine. The fact that both China and India supported this statement shows that Russia is all alone on this issue.

The main purpose of this 'peace talks' (the first ones happened in Copenhagen almost two months ago) is to bring together the West and the 'Global South' positions on the Ukraine war and what resolution of it should be.

Invitation of Russian emissaries is inevitable at some point, but at first the sides should make up a common peace initiative that can be put on the table before the Putin regime.

So far, the views of the West and Global South differ. The former is against freezing of the war now while the latter advocate halting the active fighting as soon as possible.

Russia has no private interest in any so called peace talks. Presently it is just interested in next steps to taking back its wish list of four more regions and what action to take against NATO for allowing SU34s to fly out of Poland using adapted UK missiles to strike bridges into Crimea .

That may have been the outcome of the talks in Copenhagen, but in these talks in Saudi Arabia, the Global South agreed with the West that Ukraine's territorial integrity must be part of any peace agreement.

The Copenhagen summit didn't have any outcome at all. It was not even widely reported.

It is still unclear what the final resolution would look like, or even whether there will be any at all. The summit of the heads of states is expected to take place at the end of the year.

I expect that the resolution will have some 'formal' parts (like the Ukraine's territorial integrity) with adjusted clauses putting the occupied areas in a grey zone de-facto under Russian control.

I doubt that. I think the call for territorial integrity will stand. These 40 nations, which included all the BRICS, discussed the principles under which the war should end and to leaves any part of Ukraine under Russian control would be to undermine the territorial integrity of their own countries in principle and to toss out the Charter of the United Nations.

The fact that Russia wasn't invited is an implicit condemnation of the invasion and the recognition that Russia can play no role in defining what relations among nations should be, even by the BRICS. It dismisses the Russian narrative that this is just a conflict between Russia and Ukraine or between Russia and the US/NATO, and it defines it as a conflict between Russia and the rest of the world.

Russia wants a Neutral Ukraine, protections for Ukraine's Russian minority, and security for its only warm water naval base (in Crimea). Is that so unreasonable?

It is quite hard to predict what this peace resolution would look like or even whether it will take place at all. I expressed my 'scenario' to you some time ago, you strongly disagreed. Let it be that. The time will show eventually.

I heard a version that Putin's emissaries aren't being invited in these meetings because their single role is pushing Russian propaganda narratives in a monologue form. Such narratives are 'okay' for domestic public and some abroad, but don't fit well among professional diplomats. And even Russian 'partners' such as China and India got somewhat tired of that. One can accept this version or not, depends on personal preferences.

But overall, I wouldn't call these meetings as a rising anti-Russia coalition. Participants there follow their own goals. China isn't interested in Russia's defeat, whatever that can mean. African countries are interested in stability of fuel and food supply chains and want this war to be stopped 'today'. Etc.

Russia doesn't get to take any of those things by force. Attempting to do so has turned the entire world against Russia. When long-term neutrals like Sweden and Finland join NATO, you know Russia has gone off the reservation.

Actually, no. There were no any final agreement.

Does that matter now? Europe seems to have adjusted to life without Russian oil and gas .
Not yet. The Russia still sell them plenty of energy and, anyway, the life quality and industrial production in the EU has significantly decreased.
