And America attacked Vietnam (at least it was the "worlds opinion"). But there is the difference between Russian missiles shooting down US planes in Vietnam sky and the Russian missiles attacking US bases on US soil. As well as there is the difference between Iranian missiles attacking US ships in the Red sea, and Russian missiles (launched from some HAMAS barges) attacking US ports.

Well Trump could openly state that they will reverse these decisions and cease all support for Ukraine that could, might, stave off a harsh reaction from Russia, if Trump remains silent on this then Russia will naturally have no reason to trust Trump.

Trump's talked the talk for years about this and NATO, well nothing stops him from holding a press conference today and making his position crystal clear and saying "**** you" to Biden, if Trump actually does this, the right thing, I'll go so far as to say I have some respect for him and that is not something I say lightly.

As America actually attacked Russia, Russians do ask the same question about American motives and possible further actions. "Why America started an actual, real, hot war with Russia by attacking Russian bases on undisputed Russian soil?"

From their point of view nobody start a war just as a political jesture, or to make next administration to be defeated. And they can't rule out the possibility that American goal is [however impossible it looks like] actually defeat Russia (whatever price Americans will pay for it).
So, they have a choice between:
1) no answer and allow USA attack whatever they want in Russia; this strategy will definitely means eventual defeat of Russia.

2) "uncontrolled escalation" with the risk that Americans will nuke them first; which possible means unnecessary deaths of millions of Russians.

3) well calculated preempive counter-force strike which will significantly decrease US nuclear forces (and possibly will give Russia opportunity to coerce the USA in Russia-acceptable peace with limited retaliation or without US retaliation at all).

The third opportunity looks like the safest for them. "If the fight is inevitable - you should attack first".
