We really don't need as many submarines.

At the height of the Cold War, we have 41 Ballistic Missile Subs ("41 for Freedom" was the motto). We had about double that number of Fast Attack subs.

A mere pittance when you look back at the 263 subs the US Navy had during World War II.

With the fall of The Soviet Union, the number of Fast Attack (whose primary mission was tracking and following Russian Missile Subs) and the number of FBMs needed to complete the mission was much smaller.

Today, our submarine fleet is under 70 subs, but of a superior capability (and more flexible capability) than the Cold War Era.

China (our most probably enemy with a modern military) has nearly that number, but mostly cast-off Russian Cold War Era junk.

Pregnancies aboard Submarines is a major budget line item for the US Navy.

The one ace in the hole we had against China was our subs.......a force they couldn't knock out with shore to ship missiles.....and now we find out how bad trouble we are in.....with joe biden, the Chinese communist employee of the month, running the Military....

As of this year, 18 of the US Navy’s 49 attack submarines — 37% — were out of commission, according to previously undisclosed Navy data published by the Congressional Research Service. That leaves the US at a critical disadvantage against China’s numerically superior fleet.

The maintenance backlog has “substantially reduced” the number of nuclear submarines operational at any given moment, cutting the “force’s capacity for meeting day-to-day mission demands and potentially putting increased operational pressure” on submarines that are in service, CRS naval analyst Ronald O’Rourke said in a July 6 report.

And all this at a time, we find out, that the Biden Administration is also slashing its shipbuilding proposals in the new defense budget:

There's a reason why...and it's not to reduce our capabilities. Just the opposite.

An aircraft carrier group is a big visible target on the ocean. Even though the ocean is huge....an aircraft carrier battle group (which includes submarines) is not invisible anymore the way they once were.

And getting sailors to man the things is becoming increasingly more difficult as time goes by. The Navy has been severely understaffed for over 2 decades. They have not been able to meet recruiting goals in a long time....those who are serving have been posted for longer and longer extended times at sea...the time periods they get to be stateside shorter and shorter.

It's great to have boats....it's better to have them staffed with sailors. However now the majority of their functions can be accomplished with drones that are operated by a kid in a cubicle thousands of miles away not even getting near the ocean unless he/she is on vacation. You don't need a huge manned submarine to launch missiles or torpedoes.

That's the current strategy. I don't share in this philosophy as much as they do....but whatever.

I do not want any drones, I want a citizenry that does not change its morals/views based on the party sitting in the White House.

Either congress controls the purse strings or they do not. That should not change based upon the party of the POTUS.

If we are to continue our global dominance, then we need a naval dominance. The problem is that we do not produce the ships quick anymore and have a pseudo tough population ready to beat the shit out of anyone in the front with most who will fold if anyone comes face to face in a real death situation.
