In much of the country, winter has lost its cold grip and, with the thermometer steadily above 55 F, the outdoors are calling. It's the perfect time to get the bikes out of the garage and, with a little grease and some basic tools, get them back into shape and ready to roll. Whether you have a family of clunkers or a $7000 Richard Sachs special, quarterly tuneups and monthly maintenance are necessary to keep a bike running smoothly and for a long time. If you go to a mechanic, a full tuneup will cost anywhere from $30 to $75—a worthwhile investment for the abusive cyclist without the tools or the time. But if you take your bike in for its monthly maintenance, the price starts adding up. Besides, much of the maintenance is easy, cheap and will take any DIYer about an hour. We asked Santiago "Pinkey" Gonzalez, the former "First" bike mechanic for President George W. Bush, for home tuneup tips.
