People moving from the cities because of Covid and the lack of housing starts are the main cause of high prices.
Illegals contribute some small part but that is mitigated by the fact that THEY are lowering housing costs with their cheap labor.

And note… most of those 17 million (not 21) had homes before the shortage.
Five million people living three families to an apartment does not contribute much to a housing shortage especially when they are building news homes (at very low labor rates)
