Trump has had countless bad weeks, including an impeachment and an impeachment trial in the Senate, but he may have set a record for foulness this past week. It pretty much seems like he can't do anything right.
In an interview this past week, Trump said that the coronavirus was "fading away", echoing comments he made earlier this year -- before US deaths rose past 120,000. He said that the pandemic would eventually disappear "like a miracle".
Covid-19 cases are spiking. The evidence indicates that the virus is not only still a public health threat in the US, but its rate of spread is increasing once again. The Post reports, "As coronavirus cases surge in the U.S. South and West, health experts in countries with falling case numbers are watching with a growing sense of alarm and disbelief, with many wondering why virus-stricken U.S. states continue to reopen and why the advice of scientists is often ignored."
Despite being able to appoint two conservative judges to the Supreme Court, Trump suffered two defeats at the hands of SCOTUS. First, the court discarded the Trump administration's contention that a 1964 civil rights law did not provide workplace discrimination protections to gay and transgender employees.
Then, it invalidated the White House's attempt to rescind an Obama-era program giving temporary normalized immigration status to undocumented migrants who entered the US as children.
A federal judge denied the Trump's attempt to block the upcoming publication of the book by former national security adviser John Bolton.
Several polls from various sources have come out to show Biden with sizable leads in the upcoming election. One of them is Fox News. "Joe Biden has expanded his lead over President Trump to 12 points in the latest Fox News poll, and Trump is fuming at what's normally his favorite network." Trump wanted to sue CNN because he didn't like the poll the network used. Of course, that is just another empty threat. Trump averages one of those nearly everyday.
Trump flew to Oklahoma today amid mounting questions about the firing of Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney in Manhattan, whose office had probed some of the President’s closest allies, imprisoning Michael Cohen, his former personal lawyer, and investigating Rudolph W. Giuliani, his current lawyer. As Trump left the White House for the trip to Tulsa, he said, “We have a very capable attorney general, so that’s really up to him. I’m not involved.”
Is there anyone on the planet who believes him?
Finally, Trump's stupidity could get people killed. As luck would have it, "Ahead of President Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday night, his campaign acknowledged that six staff members who were working on the event had tested positive for the virus," the Times reported.
The vast majority of Trump's supporters will follow his lead and not wear mistakes. 19,000 screaming fans will be enclosed in BOK Center for hours. It will be the perfect breeding ground for a very contagious virus.
Then those folks will go home and spread the virus to their children, friends, grandma, and grandpa.
Like I said, it has been a tough week for Trump. The significance is, he brought every bit of it onto himself.
