That's part of the point. Germany and Japan would have attacked our resources in South America, who would not have been able to put up much of a fight against them, and thus cutting us off from foreign resources.

Most South American countries didn't formally join the war in order to trade with the Allies without repercusions from the Axis Powers and as long as South Americans didn't send weapons to the Allies the Axis Powers were neutral against them.
