There is nothing wrong about the current interpretation. In Senate debate on the 14th Amendment, the author was asked about whether this would give citizenship to children of parents who are not citizens. He confirmed that it would. That was the original intent.

All persons, under our jurisdiction, (with two exceptions ...diplomats and family members here, and native Americans who were not under US Government jurisdiction, but ruled under their own reservation leaders and laws and tax collection)

It does NOT say all slaves born on our soil.....that would have been so easy to state in the amendment, IF THAT IS WHAT THE WRITERS of the amendment meant or wanted....
