President Donald Trump announced today that he approved a petroleum pipeline that would go right "under the wall" to Mexico as part of his administration's goal of U.S. energy "dominance."

At the Unleashing American Energy Event on Thursday, Trump said the pipeline would "further boost American energy exports."

The new pipeline from Texas to Mexico won't be transporting oil, however. Built by NuStar Logistics, the pipeline would transport petroleum and natural gas to and from its terminal in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The 10-inch diameter New Burgos Pipeline will run parallel to the existing 8-inch pipeline. The new pipeline will transport the equivalent of 108,000 barrels per day.

To be sure, export of natural gas to Mexico is not a new trend. The trend started gaining momentum in 2010 and is part of that country's plan to reduce the use of coal to produce power.

Mexico has increasingly been importing cheap U.S. natural gas after opening parts of its energy sector to foreign investment. U.S. natural gas pipeline exports to Mexico have nearly doubled since the start of 2015, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency.

That is an interesting plan.
