This is a huge problem in the industry and on America's highways. Truck drivers must be able to read and understand signs in English. There are several physical signs that I can think of just off the top of my head that are vital to observe while driving.

For example...

(Yes...that does say max weight 5 tons. My lightest tractor weighs over 8 tons by itself, empty with no fuel.)

This enforcement of existing regulations is long overdue.

Now resist the next whinefest by large carriers that we must increase the maximum weight limits from 80,000 lbs to 91,000 lbs.

From the article:

"President Trump believes that English is a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers, as they should be able to read and understand traffic signs; communicate with traffic safety officers, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station personnel; and provide and receive feedback and directions in English," the White House official shared.

Truckers who are unable to prove they are proficient in English will be "placed out-of-service, enhancing roadway safety," according to the White House.

I'm not buying that the can-opener bridge cannot be raised because the rail road owns it and doesn't want to. You mean the railroad has more rights and authority than does the state or the Fed?

There are hundreds of low bridges on major thoroughfares in major cities and thousands more across the country. You either learn where they are the hard way by trial and error, or buy a $400 truck GPS and hope it's right. Usually, due to litigation, a truck GPS is programmed to take you way outta your way to avoid these areas altogether. But low bridges and weight restrictions are just a fact of life. Many secondary routes in the Midwest have seasonal weight restrictions. The sign may say something like 22,382 lb weight restriction November thru March.

Here's one off of US-30 in Ohio...

Your GPS will tell you to take this road... and it's legal for the months where the weight limit isn't reduced. This is from Google Maps just from memory. I know the sign is there and I'm pretty sure the reduction is from the end of harvest to the begining of planting season, but don't hold me to that.

But it's for these reasons it is fundamental that CDL drivers can read English fluently.

P.S. - the railroad has already raised that bridge up to 12' 4".

My understanding is it cannot be raised further because it is at the maximum rail incline allowable.

There is an infamous railroad bridge on the campus of the University of Louisville that is a common site for wrecks because driver's do not see about 10 warning signs that it has a low clearance. People are too stupid sometimes.

Democrats actually think a truck driver can be illiterate

Do we need more proof that democrats are literally and purpisely destroying the USA
Fact.

It was Democrats that caused this mess...

"The new order reverses a 2016 memorandum issued during former President Barack Obama's administration, which removed the requirement to place drivers out of service for English Language Proficiency (ELP) violations and eased enforcement standards."

The Owner Operator and Independent Driver's Association released the following statement:

"OOIDA and the 150,000 truckers we proudly represent strongly support President Trump's decision to resume enforcement of English proficiency requirements for commercial drivers. Basic English skills are essential for reading critical road signs, understanding emergency instructions, and interacting with law enforcement. Road signs save lives—but only when they're understood. That's why OOIDA petitioned the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance earlier this year to reinstate English proficiency as an out-of-service violation. Today's announcement is a welcome step toward restoring a common-sense safety standard."

Absolutely! I didn't drive downtown that often because I was still in high school until I joined the Navy, but I worked in a school out by the airport in the Churchill Downs area for three years about 2009-2012.
