Instead of spending about 18 weeks training at the academy in Quantico, Va., the group of agents, tentatively scheduled to start in October, will receive eight weeks, according to the people. And the agents will no longer need to fulfill a longstanding requisite for joining the bureau: a bachelor’s degree.
As a reference, the Austin Police academy is approximately 8 months, followed by a 12 week field training program with an FTO.

If you lower the standards you degrade the organization. This is true with any organization, and is a well-known, established fact of human life and organizational management. I think when most people think of the FBI, they think of the field agents. But the field agents are just the tip of the iceberg so to speak. They have intelligence analysts who research and connect the dots, forensic scientists who process evidence, linguists, digital examiners, accountants, and technical specialists. The agents are the face of the investigation, but the backbone is this broad network of experts who all need to be educated and knowledgeable in their specific fields.

Time is not the issue. It's what can be reasonably LEARNED in the time period. So the presumption is that if it formerly took 18 weeks to learn everything they needed to cover to become competent agents, then reducing the training time by half begs the question "what are they removing from their training that they no longer view as critical to their competencies"?
