That period crosses administrations, and the preliminary benchmark always looks huge because it’s based on partial UI data.

The actual final revisions for the 2024 calendar year (Biden’s last full year) are public, and they total only −236,000, not −911,000. Every month gets revised once we get the full UI data, and 2024 ended up with 8 months revised down, 4 up, netting out to that −236k.

So no — the “final revision” was not −911k, it wasn’t for 2024, and it wasn’t even final. It’s just a misunderstanding of what the benchmark process is measuring.

If you want to compare actual 2024 performance, use the final CES monthly numbers, not a preliminary benchmark covering a mismatched year.

Low energy prices caused by economic collapse are absolutely not good. That’s exactly what happened under Trump in 2020. Every “cheap gas” number people brag about came straight out of the COVID recession—millions unemployed, demand cratered, oil futures went negative, and prices collapsed. Nobody wants $1.80 gas if it means no one’s driving to work because they don’t have a job. That’s not an energy strategy; that’s a recession.

And the idea that U.S. output alone sets prices is nonsense. Oil is a global market. U.S. production matters, but OPEC+ production levels matter far more. Right now OPEC members are fighting with each other and pumping above the reduced quotas that Trump negotiated in 2020—which is part of why the global supply picture looks the way it does.

Bottom line: low prices because of high supply in a strong economy = good.
Low prices because demand collapsed under a recession = very bad.
Trump’s “cheap gas” was the second one. No serious economist confuses the two.
