Yes, he won't admit it to others, but he must know it's happening. Had he seen when Putin played Xi numerous times, he might have got the picture years ago.

I think trump's apparent ignorance of Poootin's evil character is intentional. He wants Poootin to advance his march to reassemble the old USSR...but he knows that if his bowing to Poootin becomes too obvious, the outrage among citizens and repubs would be devastating. He has to cloak his acquiescence to Poootin's evil intentions.

If trump could get away with it, without worldwide outrage, he would actually fight on Russia's side. But he is slowly and v deliberately turning the US into a Russian satellite. Scary times....with an evil man in charge.

I think Trump sees Putin as Trump sees other rival billionaires (I mean, Putin is a billionaire anyway). He respects those people who have cheated, stolen and killed their way up the money ladder. He can't see anything else.
