General Lee was a great general and educator, a not so great human being. Grant was a fantastic terrific super good general, despite his human failings that caused people to doubt him. He came from a goofy character in April 1861 to commander of all union armies by March 1864.

Lee's record on slavery is mixed. His wife had 200+ of them which were due to be manumitted in 1863. He didn't ever have enough money to pay the bail required of a slave owner manumitting a slave. Grant owned 1 slave who he did manumitted almost immediately after paying the bail by depriving himself.

Lee's record as a teacher is great. Grant's record as POTUS has lots of problems.

Grant has the record at a butcher, despite statistically he had tone of the best record for keeping his troops alive. Lee has a reputation as being concerned for his troops, but statistically his record is the worst.

Grant eliminated three confederate armies. Only Thomas could equal him

No, he was a great human being.
He came from a prominent family, his father fought and commanded in the Revolutionary War.
He was considered a consummate soldier by his superiors and those who served under him.
He was also considered in every way a superior human being. He resigned his commission in the US army because of his character and his belief that it was wrong for the feds to wage war on the south. Likewise, he did not believe in secession or slavery. But he believed Americans have the right to defend themselves from tyrants. And so that's what he did.
