People were angry with Carter and Democrats in general due to the economy, high gasoline prices, and high energy bills. Then the failed rescue of our embassy staff in Iran who had been held hostage for years BY THEIR CURRENT PRESIDENT.

Mondale promised higher taxes across the board to pay for the National Debt while Reagan promised cutting taxes.

Back pocket politics won the election. (Double digit inflation and job losses were climbing)

Now interesting fact is that almost immediately everything got super expensive. Carter's "strong dollar " policy (which mirrors Biden's) was abolished and an export economy was starting. Jobs were slow in returning. Computer tech jobs were hard to come by for the untrained people.
