Public schools aren't socialism, welfare isn't socialism, tax subsidies aren't socialism, etc etc.
The continued dumbing down of America strikes again.
Of course they are and yes it did.
Who owns the school district? Is it the property owners? The state who forces us to pay property taxes to the school district, even though we haven't had kids in PS for decades? Is it the kids whom we pay to educate?
Public schools have naught to do with the economy of this country.
If you want to argue that the federal government and perhaps even the state governments shouldn't have anything to do with local education make that argument, but they are not socialism.
The definition of socialism is government control of the means of production and distribution. In education, government control well more than 90%, paid for by the public. That would be 90% ownership/control of the means of production/distribution of that sector of the economy.
It's not REAL, COMPLETE Socialism, but close enough.
And, public education K-12 is, for the most part, complete shit.
My kids are fortunate enough to go to one of the best public school districts in the nation, where they are better than expensive private schools, which sucks because I am perpetuating the commie take-over of education. I recognize my partial hypocrisy, but I pay for this shit by government force, so I may as well use it.
Public Universities are MUCH better than K-12 for many reasons. One is the exclusivity factor (they can limit the number of future ditch diggers they must educate). Another factor is that they have stiff competition from the private sector (U.S. News and World Report Top Universities top 10 are all private universities except MIT). And, the private sector often funds public university research, so higher education is no more than government participating in the free market.
