“You want to know the truth?” Trump told members of the Detroit Economic Club as he painted a picture of what his opponent would do to America. “It’ll be like Detroit. Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re gonna have a mess on your hands.”
Audience members clapped when Trump said he wouldn’t allow Kamala Harris to make the rest of the country mirror their hometown, suggesting that, at least among his fans, Trump’s comments weren’t too off base.

The wasteland era was about 30-40 years ago, and yes, is ongoing in many places. But the city is coming back alive in a lot of ways too, esp with Ford Field/Comerica Park/Little Caesar's Arena in close proximity. Young people are moving back to city apartments, etc.
But it takes decades I think for a city to truly recover from a horrid (and well-earned) reputation....and maybe they never do fully recover.
Trump's comments seem offensive at first blush but if you're a Michigander, they also hit home. Detroit has been solely Democrat for probably my entire lifetime, and look at the trajectory.
Trump is now trying to lose.
Actually, Detroiters have always known it's the rich whites in the suburbs who have cut blacks off from economic opportunities. White flight.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan slammed Trump’s latest comments and said the city is on an upswing.
“Detroit just hosted the largest NFL Draft in history, the Tigers are back in the playoffs, the Lions are headed to the Super Bowl, crime is down and our population is growing,” Duggan posted on X, formerly called Twitter. “Lots of cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump’s help.”
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) told Trump to “keep Detroit out of your mouth.”
“Detroit is the epitome of ‘grit,’ defined by winners willing to get their hands dirty to build up their city and create their communities—something Donald Trump could never understand,” Whitmer wrote on X. “So keep Detroit out of your mouth. And you better believe Detroiters won’t forget this in November.”
State Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D) was even more direct in her response to Trump.
“As a proud elected representative of tens of thousands of Detroiters: **** this guy,” McMorrow said on X. “Don’t come back.”

Why bother, you will ignore them like everything else. Where are the manufacturing jobs? In right to work states.
No union shenanigans.
But take a look. The UAW just had strikes against Stellantis and Ford and GM. The end result? Stellantis laid off 20,000 in the first go round, and they're laying off more now.
Why? Because they priced themselves out of a job. The union got what they demanded, but very few workers will be left to make that high wage.
