Depends on where you came in on the story, doesn't it.

In 2010, the murder rate was about 400 a year. Then all the common sense gun laws we had in Chicago and Illinois got thrown out thanks to the National Rampage Association owning the courts, and murder spiked at 769 in 2016. It's been going down since then, mostly thanks to Eddie Johnson's efforts, we're down to 436 so far this year, and we might keep it under 500 for the whole year.

This is STILL too high. The murder rate in America is too high, but as long as the National Rampage Association is allowed to write the gun laws, that's what we are stuck with.
