Ukraine wanted to join EU which is non military and is about Economic Cooperation...

Ukraine had no wish to join NATO until Russia invaded the Crimea and the Donbas...

Ukraine rightfully pointed to the Budapest Memorandum and asked for US/NATO help.

Russia's actions started that cycle. Everyone tried the kid gloves with Russia and they just followed with more escalation...

Then they tried for the whole country...

Let's be clear, Putin thought he was going to get away with this Russian expansion and if he did he has already stated that he believes the Baltic countries and Finland are on his agenda too... They are NATO countries which would mean US soldiers on the ground...
As wars go this is relatively a bargain... US military aid is mainly military and the stuff they are sending is old while US is costing it at replacement cost for new military equipment. So for about the equivalent of two months of Iraq war they have Russia stuck in a quagmire..
Defeat Russia now and Putin's biggest problems are internal. EU is not buying Russian Oil and Gas. China is leveraging its position to extract what the what out of Russia (i.e. this will lead Water and Land).
If TPP was in place now, China and India would be told to stop buying Russian Oil and Gas or EU and TPP would increase tarrifs on certain products...
