Trump considers EO to expedite nuclear power, is that even possible, or responsible?

I'm generally a Trump supporter, but this is plain stupid. (if he does it)

Trump would basically be saying that 3 pregnant women can make a baby in 3-months.

Trump administration considers orders expediting nuclear plant construction, NYT reports

Nuclear power is not something you want to rush. This idea isn't even half-baked.

Finding suitable sites for many more nuke plants is tough, not even counting the NIMBY lawsuits.
Permitting can take 10-years
Construction can take 10-years
Fuel and waste are major issues
Running nuclear powerplants is not easy

Can Trump wave a magic wand? Making that much high quality specialty steel to fabricate reactors and the plants is other worldly.

The answer to all of these questions is "Why?"

When you find the answer, you will have your solution.

The only thing "half-baked" is you making these sill comments like you are high on drugs!

Well, modular nuclear is a thing. It's a good design.
It does not need to take that long. Small, modular, nuclear, compatible expansions and things.
The tech is here. Probably Trump learned about that by talking to the UK dude.
I already made my money on that when Europe got on it, but there might be another thing. Maybe.

The "why" is simple, so the US wins the AI war, since AI is apparently a power hog and Trump wants to double nuclear powerplant capacity.

I worked on the design and construction of several nuclear powerplants, we got tested for drugs.

Could Trump's EO supersede the Atomic Energy Act of 1954?

I think he meant,
Why can permitting take 10 years?
Why can construction take 10 years?
Why are fuel and waste major issues?

Supporting nuclear is intelligent. While I think Trump is an odious and despicable miscreant, I support expanding nuclear. Fusion is the future.

You didn't answer the question, though you probably read it in your own demented way.

Why does it take so long to accomplish these steps? The Navy has safely operated reactors for decades with zero problems. They don't seem to have any issues with speed of development or the amount of steel required.

So, the article really didn't say much. It was only like 1 paragraph; that I could see..

When he says expedite, couldn't that mean, to get the process started sooner, not necessarily accelerate the construction process?

Those durations are "typical" for the large base-load nuclear powerplants, the smaller plants would probably be too small to double the nuclear capacity, currently at 19% of the total electrical capacity.

If you want to read up on the "history" of several typical nuke plants here are links to them:

Sorry, I misinterpreted the "why".
The Navy probably didn't have to follow all of the various regulations that commercial powerplants have to follow. I'm not sure if Trump's EOs would supersede state regulations. Governor Cuomo shut down a nuke plant on a "whim".

Why are they typical?
Why can't we approve a standard design and make permitting a year?

True.
The article said Trump was considering EOs to expedite "construction", so that means all needed steps to get them built

Okay, so I'm sure you have some examples of small modular fusion plants ready to ship?
Yeah, no, that's not an actual thing. It's a nice idea, but not an actual thing. :nono:

Because the site conditions vary from site to site.

1. Seabrook had to withstand a 747 crash into it and a tidal wave
2. Diablo Canyon had to withstand a very severe earthquake
3. The others had very different design conditions
a. foundation designs and seismic responses
b. BWR or PWR (reactor designs)
c. many other design differences

It should be small and adaptable enough to plug into just about anywhere. It's not a super-duper hard ask, really.

Its not a refrigerator. Ever heard of Chernobyl?

They are not available in the US yet. Care to buy a Russian or Chinese plant?

As of 2024, only China and Russia have successfully built operational SMRs. There are more than 80 modular reactor designs under development in 19 countries. Russia has been operating a floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov, in Russia's Far East (Pevek), commercially since 2020.The floating plant is the first of its kind in the world. China's pebble-bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor HTR-PM was connected to the grid in 2021

Are you Eastern European? Rolls Royce has patents on things that are already installed in Western Europe right now. Like I said, I made my money on this a while back.
And yes, I have heard of Chernobyl.
Know where Chernobyl is? The like freakin' northern 1/3 of Ukraine. That's where Chernobyl is.
It's all fucked around there. Putin made his soldiers go through it to invade from the north. That was a dick move.

No I'm from PA. I might be wrong, but Trump would want the SMRs to be all American made.
