states fill the gap...if they want

I get it. But why stop here. Why not end subsidies for "everything" ?

President Trump has repeatedly promised to "make America affordable again." But for those Americans most in need, his administration's latest budget plan would dramatically shrink the federal rental aid that helps keep millions of people housed.

In its request for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the White House called the current system of federal rental assistance "dysfunctional" and proposed essentially ending Section 8 and other housing voucher programs. Its plan calls for cutting rental aid by about 40% and sending that money to states "to design their own rental assistance programs based on their unique needs and preferences."

Great idea. Let the states set their priorities.

Thats the plan. They are going to do the same for Medicaid. Push it to the state to fund a portion. The State will then not do that so those persons will lose their coverage.

Never heard of rental assistance? Is that sect#8? Full of fraud?
It’s a misguided concept from day one that federal government should pay for the roof over your head. We had so many single moms living in 2 bedroom 2 bath places with one child. If people were disciplined snd committed to themselves then those two would buddy up in group housing. Instead government pays $1,500 of an $1,800 rental. It’s ridiculous

If you are going to cut the safety line to those in need, maybe it is time to cut the subsidies to those making "billions" that really do not need it.
You see what happens when you are a high tax nation with massive social programs and getting higher? Pettiness, jealousies, stealing, graft, corruption, class accusations, racial and gender and gender choice accusations, religious or non-religious accusations, and so on. And this does not even include all of the waste of the government. DOGE has found to many intertwining connections of the waste that may affect areas not of waste. Overall, of these decades, our government has set up destructive traps if areas of resources are touched in many ways. And all of the propaganda resources in it also. Some people have gotten wealthy on government that we do not know of or is not spouted.

Section 8 is welfare. Let the states handle it. All the parasites can move to deep blue states. What could possibly go wrong fat lady?

The red states not only will not, they cannot make up the difference. They simply do not have the budget even if they wanted to.

Agree. All my friends graduated from college, got entry-level professional jobs, and buddied up in group houses - each with their own bedroom but shared common areas.

Why should a single mother on welfare with no job, and no education, get to live at a higher level than those who went to school for a career and work for a living?

In an adjacent town, there is an area that is flooded with illegal immigrants, and there is a low-class garden apartment building right on a main road that has 3-bedroom apartments. Lots of illegals buddy up in these units, with their babies, and qualify for Sec 8 because the babies are “anchors.”

Out of curiosity, I checked the rental rates. The 3-bedroom units go for more than $4,000 a month. Guess who is paying the bulk of that rate? Taxpayers.

NOBODY is there paying full freight. They’re all on Sec 8.

Leftists are always generous…..with other people’s money.
Technically we could eliminate everything including Social Security and Medicare, and balance the budget quite easily. You would need an act of Congress though.

If anyone has ever seen what happens at Section 8 rental housing they would be horrified. They are filled with deadbeats and criminals and druggies and prostitutes. You wouldn't want to live there. The landlords like it because they get premium rents. The deadbeats like them because they pay a fraction of what would be customary.
