The Supreme Court shot down Trump's attempt to place the citizenship question on the census. Chief Justice John Roberts said that Trump's reason was "contrived."
"Accepting
contrived reasons would defeat the purpose of the enterprise."
Contrived is judicial code for lying.
With the deadline passed coinciding with this decision from the Supremes, that is enough to stop any President with a half a brain. Of course, that excludes Trump.
“We are not backing down on our effort to determine the citizenship status of the United States population,” Trump declared, surprising both his DOJ and Commerce Department who had accepted the Court's decision and the printing began without the question.
"The DOJ legal team is forced to say that everything they have said so far is in error -- including the July 1st deadline -- and they still must come up with a legitimate reason, not a political reason, for the question to be included on the census.
"The dance is over. Trump just doesn't know it," I said Tuesday.
"Trump doesn't have the balls to challenge a ruling by the Supreme Court. This is just going to be another photo op, another phony show presented by Trump Productions." That was said today, hours before Trump's announcement.
I know this President well. He is all talk. He proved it again today with his photo op.
"President
Donald Trump announced Thursday he is backing down from his
effort to include a citizenship question on the
2020 census, and
will instead take executive action that instructs the Commerce Department to obtain an estimate of U.S. citizenship through other means," ABC News reported.
"I am hereby ordering every department and agency in the federal government to provide the Department of Commerce with all requested records regarding the number of citizens and noncitizens in our country," Trump said in a Rose Garden announcement. "They must furnish all legally accessible records in their possession immediately. We will utilize these vast federal databases to gain a full, complete, and accurate count of the non-citizen population."
In other words, this is just another photo op, a show in which his followers can cheer mightily for a victory their hero lost.
The President has complete control over his departments. He routinely gives them orders because that is what he is supposed to do. However, today Trump Productions made a big show of a President doing what he normally does on a daily basis.
Moreover, the order appears merely to provide the plans the Census Bureau had announced last year, making it less a new policy than a means of covering Trump’s retreat.
Why all this? The first answer is, Trump likes a good show in which he has the starring role.
The second answer is, he lost a fight he never should have started. He was trying to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. His fans will believe it, but the vast majority of Americans will not.
It was just another photo op.
