Trump and Musk Are Going to War Against Military Veterans

Donald Trump's new executive order, titled "Implementing the President's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Workforce Optimization Initiative," outlines exactly how Trump and Elon Musk plan to dismantle the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and strip transitioning military veterans and their families overseas of the generous federal hiring incentives they rely on.

This executive order seeks to impose severe hiring restrictions and would disproportionately harm veterans, who make up one-third of the federal workforce. Requiring agencies to hire only one new employee for every four who leave will drastically reduce VA staffing levels. At a time when the veteran population is aging and the VA's mission has expanded under Biden, this policy will lead to massive delays and outright denials in health care, benefits processing, and disability claims - the essential services veterans depend on to survive.

The order also forces agencies to implement immediate reductions in force, prioritizing cuts to positions not explicitly mandated by law. In practice, this means slashing administrative staff, veteran outreach programs, and transition assistance. Many of these programs help veterans adjust to civilian life, with federal employment serving as a stable career path for thousands. Active-duty military members stationed overseas also rely on these programs for critical support, from child care to helping their spouses secure employment in foreign countries where they may lack language skills or legal work status.

I wonder what veterans are thinking now.

Here is even more.

In a news conference about the worst air crash in the United States in two decades, Trump claimed the agency was “actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities and psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under diversity and inclusion hiring initiatives.”

The remarks, made without evidence, touched off anxiety and frustration among federal employees with disabilities, many of them military veterans, who spoke with USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

“Blaming disabled individuals for a plane crash speaks to a mentality of not believing disabled people are suited to valuable work,” a disabled National Park Service staffer said.

Now watch the Trump Humpers run in here trying to defend this garbage.
Retirees, vets with service related needs, and surviving family members will see no resection in benefits

Soldiers who served a couple of years but less than 20 are no longer eligible for lifetime healthcare

Thats regrettable but we do have a $2 trillion budget deficit

Did tax on Social Security originate with Reagan or Republicans? Would Democrats go along with legislation today to not tax SS?

I don’t care which party pushed for it, taxing Social Security income is dumb.
As I called it, Taxing the taxes, which is illegal. Which is why I played tax avoision for forty-five years.

During Reagan, we had our healthcare cut until Bush jr. the GI bill was modified and the soldier paid for it like a college savings plan.

The Dems succumbed to Reagan and Reagan did the same with Congress, they called it cooperation.

I agree, income tax on Social Security is a head scratcher. Basically you have one government agency handing you a check in one hand (SS Benefit), and taking it back with the other (IRS).

However that was part of the deal cut in 1983 to attempt to protect SS for 50 years. And considering the Trust Fund will be exhausted in 2035 - they hit it pretty good.

Now the thinking through the why.

So income taxes paid on Social Security benefits, are paid BACK to the Social Security Administration to fund current benefits. The problem is:
  • The amount of SS Benefits taxable (0, 50, or 85%) changed depending on OTHER income.
  • The amount of taxes paid on SS eligible income depends on other income (work, pensions, 401k distributions, Interest, Dividends, etc.) and the tax bracket you end up in.
So there are a couple of problems:
  1. There is no "flat rate" (either dollar or percentage) that applies equally. Low income people would see no change. People in the 50% to 85% range would see different impacts based on other income they have.
  2. SS Income taxes fund current benefits, exempting SS income and yet paying the same benefits means that MORE money comes out of the Trust Fund and it will be exhausted quicker. Without other changes the 20-25% cut in benefits would happen sooner.
  3. This impacts Federal Income Taxes in determining AGI (Adjusted Gross Income). Most states start with Federal AGI as the basis for determining State Income tax (which is then further modified by state specific deductions, exemptions, etc.) meaning not only will the Federal government see a decrease in income tax revenue, State will also see a decrease in State Income tax revenue.
Not saying I'm against having my SS (which starts later this year) be tax free, but there are costs and impacts associated with such an action.

That's easy for someone who didn't serve, go get 2yrs and then come back and tell us that.

If you only served a few years and have no service related injury you might lose your free healthcare

No wonder you’re pissed
